CSIR – National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR – NIO)

Session on branding and Promotion

CSIR – National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR – NIO) is one of the 37 constituent laboratories of the Council of Scientific & Industrial research, New Delhi. The organization is headquartered at Dona Paula in Goa. It has regional centres at Kochi, Mumbai and Vishakhapatnam.

Neena Dayal had the privilege and honour of working on a documentary styled film for CSIR – NIO’s Goa headquarters.

This film was based on a small booklet that CSIR – NIO was using to create awareness amongst the other research and development institutions about the oceans of the world, and the impact they have on the environment. This little booklet was named, “Sagar”, a Hindi word meaning ocean.

This small booklet had to be converted into a documentary film of 45 minutes duration. This was quite a challenging task as there was not enough information available in this small booklet.

Neena’s abilities for extensive scientific research, and content development came into full force in this assignment. These were the days when online research was not very popular. So Neena had to rely on conventional methodologies for research and then developed the content for writing the script for this film.

She also used her own science backgrounds, and instinctive feel for the pulse of the audience to the fullest, to give shape to this film, so that it became impactful for the end users.

The assignment shaped her vision not just as a film maker, but also as a content developer. She developed keen insights into understanding the requirements of an assignment, where one has to not just elaborate the content extensively, but also has to make it interesting to the audience who uses it later.

Such assignments helped Neena in constructing her training and coaching programs also as they developed her perspective from the point of view of the audience interest.
