Global Careers

Have you ever wanted a profession where you can make lots of money, and travel to new places, and have lots of enjoyment while doing your work? Have you ever silently resented a high-flying neighbor or friend, who seems to just have it all, while what exactly they do for a living is not very clear to you?

Well, if the answer to any of the above questions is a yes, then you have dreamt of having a global job and a global career.

Global careers broadly defined by Financial Times Lexicon are careers based on international experience gained over time through performing work with global responsibilities and cross-cultural experience.

Earlier scholars also called global careers as international careers. This was indicative of building a career based on periods abroad and at home. This was initially generally between the two countries. But, with globalization and Internet technology making its advent, it has become possible to conduct business simultaneously between different countries. Also, the nature of doing global work has changed considerably. Therefore, now global careers have acquired a totally new dimension, with new career opportunities emerging quite frequently.

Global careers are in demand all over the world as people’s expectations with their lives are skyrocketing. Yet, very few students get good information about them while they are in the process of choosing their career paths. I have been running a successful global business, with my core capability of content creation for different media since 2002. I have now decided to share my cross-cultural experiences through my blogs. So, keep watching this space for insights on global jobs and global career opportunities.

In this post, I will give you the five most important reasons why you should also choose global jobs and global careers.

1. Chance to Experience the World:

This is a beautiful world we live in. A great way to enjoy the diversity and richness of this world is through global jobs. You get to meet people from diverse backgrounds and develop professional relationships with them, which many times lead to good personal friendships also. You get to experience their culture first hand through these wonderful relationships. You also get to add great value to them through your work.

In short, if you are working in a global job, you get to know the insider details of the emotional side of people from different countries and cultures. And despite the obvious differences, when you eventually make the real human-to-human connect with them, it results in true cross-cultural collaboration. This is something that you can never experience so deeply on a tourist visa.

2. Possibilities of Greater Financial Surplus:

There is a huge possibility that the currency that you make money in, is many times higher in value than your own currency. This calls for immediate financial gratification. Many times this income is also non-taxable by your native country as you get a non-resident earner status. So, the chances of having a higher financial surplus at hand are available through having global jobs flourishing into global careers.

3. Prospects of Super Specializations Leading to Indispensability:

Indispensability to an organization is the most coveted status that an employee can attain. There are several ways of attaining this coveted status. But, at the core of this is always super specialization.

When you are super specialized in your core competency, you tend to continuously add unique value to the organization you are working in. A good example of this is the chefs in the hospitality industry. The entire hospitality industry operates on varieties of foods and beverages; and good chefs are at the nucleus of this. The more a chef super specializes in their field, the more they become indispensable to the organization they work in. Here is a great opportunity for starting a global career as a chef in cruise ships if you are an Indian citizen

4. Plausibility of Unconventional Growth:

Indispensability demands that you grow your capabilities in unconventional ways. This is an age of super specializations. When you are in global jobs which open avenues into global careers, you have to have cutting edge capabilities in your core areas of work.

Today’s world is a highly competitive one. There are always more people available for any job than there are number of jobs. The best person always wins at global jobs. So, you need to be the best in your professional core competencies.

The global jobs also provide you the unbridled opportunity of unconventional experiential learning. If you are really interested in becoming indispensable to the global industry you operate in, continuous learning and growing is the only option. If you like the work you do learning and growing in it becomes a smooth ride.

For instance, if we look at our earlier example of chefs, if you love to cook, and you wish to see the world while doing it, becoming a chef at a cruise liner may be a good option for you.

The more you work in this field, the more you learn and grow and enrich your knowledge with cross-cultural exposure. This kind of experiential learning and growth is really not possible to attain through any other methods.

5. Flexibility of Choices:

The flexibility that comes with doing well in your global careers is immense. Again going to our earlier example of chefs, if you super specialize in your field, you can start a travel blog. You can have your own YouTube channel. You can have your own TV show. You can write books, or hire a writer to write them for you. In essence, if you use your creativity, you can open numerous vistas of global career opportunities for yourself.   The possibilities are immense.

Global jobs and careers present an opportunity of developing your skills. There is no upper limit to the levels your skills can be developed into.

There is a huge dearth of highly skilled people in almost every profession of the world, even though there are a large number of average performers available. Inevitably the highest skilled people get to the top and claim the largest piece of the pie. They also remain always in-demand and have no retirement age.

When they actively stop working in their fields, they can always rely on meaty consulting and mentoring assignments, which lead to independently-owned businesses.

Think of choosing global jobs that have the caliber of taking you into a fascinating journey of developing your skills that can stay relevant to a worldwide audience for a long time to come.
